Spinifex paper is more than just paper!! it’s a pr Spinifex paper is more than just paper!! it’s a process deeply connected to the Blackstone Community 🌾

First developed in Blackstone in the late 1990s, Spinifex paper is handmade using native grass harvested on Country and transformed through a slow, sustainable process. From collecting and preparing the fibres, to pressing and drying each sheet, every step is done by hand.

Now, Papulankutja Artists, with the support of BHP and the wider Blackstone community, are bringing this practice back — reviving an important initiative that blends traditional knowledge, creativity, and skill-sharing across generations.

Our artists have been busy in studio building momentum in Spinifex paper production with the aim of hopefully developing a product soon!

Our artists recently travelled across the desert t Our artists recently travelled across the desert to Tjukurla to partner with Tjarlirli Art in sharing knowledge, strengthening skills and continuing culture through art with the AACHWA “Our Country Moves” initiative.

Our talented artists, Paula Lyons-Jones and Kira Porter worked with the Tjarlirli Art team to train young art workers, focusing on core skills such as canvas stretching, colour mixing, and photo cataloguing.

Thank you to AACHWA for this initiative – we had a great time!

Our Country Moves is an Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of WA (AACHWA) initiative that empowers Aboriginal art centres to promote, empower and connect themselves on Country and artistically.

Proudly supported by Lotterywest, BHP, The Federal Office of the Arts through the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) fund, the Australian Government through Creative Australia and the WA Government.

In the debut solo exhibition of paintings, Sharon paints the Country of her Grandfather, Aputula, using an aerial perspective inspired by a flight she took over the region back in 2008. Since then, she’s been mapping its rivers, salt lakes and surface shapes entirely from memory

The lovely Janet Forbes — our talented Papulankutj The lovely Janet Forbes — our talented Papulankutja artist behind the upcoming exhibition at Short St Gallery 🎨

For this exhibition, Janet’s paintings explore elements of Wati Kutjarra — the story of two powerful magicians who came to the Ngaanyatjarra Lands from far away to the west. Each work shares different elements of the Wati Kutjarra story

Janet’s work, along with a selection from other artists, will be part of the upcoming exhibition opening 13 March at @shortstgallery in Broome
