Desert claypans are shallow temporary lakes after rainfall. The soft sediments with low permeability, allow them to hold water. After the rains stop the top layer of fine silt starts to dry out and crack into odd shapes in the hot sun. The colour varies from browns to greys with salt edges. They are like salt lakes which tend to be crusted by salt that surfaces as the water evaporates. Claypans are generally highly muddy due to their clay substrate and are highly valued for their water as they support desert flora and fauna.
